GAME COUNTER - NORFOLK LIAR
Marked by 'G&J.W.HAWKSLEY'
In mint condition.

The Norfolk Liar came into being as a result of the competition between Victorian Sportsmen with Norfolk as their county of choice. Personal bags and reputations were jealously guarded and sometimes personal bags were quoted in the newspapers of the day.
The counter is worn on a long chain around the neck beneath the jacket.

All four dials (PHEASANTS - PARTRIDGES - HARES - RABBITS) have a one-way ratchet and it takes a certain positive pressure to click the dial on - one click being one head of game.
On big days the scores were written down after each drive and the counter returned to zero.
